Ammonium Bisulfide Corrosion

Ammonium Bisulfide Corrosion

Ammonium Bisulfide Corrosion

(OP)
Hello,
Does anyone know the corrosion mechanism associated with ammonium bisulfide? Is this mostly a corrosion/erosion issue? Also, is Inconel 625 an acceptable alloy to protect against it?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Jamie

Temp is around 245F and conc is near 7557 ppm. NH3 in the water is 2520 ppm. I believe there is also NH4Cl. Not sure of any other impurities.

It depends on many factors below;

1. Velocity
2. Amount and type of liquid HC
3. Temperature
4. NH3 & H2S (and HCl) partial pressure
5. NH4HS concentration
6. Wash water treatment/ Water quality
7. Dew point control
8. pH
9. Materials
10. Others

Normally the recommended materials may be upgraded according to the severity.

CS <  (316 SS) < 2205 DSS < Alloy 825 < Alloy 625 < Titanium or Alloy C276

Thanks...im guessing those are also in order of increasing cost?

RE: Ammonium Bisulfide Corrosion

...and decreasing availability.

Actually all of those alloys are more or less available, depending on the porduct for that you need.

My personal comment would be to not look at 625.  It costs nearly as much as a "C" type alloy and it does not have as good of corrosion resistance.  I would look at the trade offs between 825 and a "C" alloy (C276, C22, 686, 59, this last one being easiest to weld).

Thank you all for your answers. Do any of you know the corrosion mechanism of NH4SH?
