References - too slow
References - too slow
(OP)
Dear Friends,
I have Solidworks 2005 SP5. Good Machines windows 2000 pro SP4 and WinXP SP2. Pentium IV, 1Gb, on a 100mbs network. Good Dell server.
Our files are not organized correctly and many references were lost because everybody moved files without care. Now, any small or big file we try to open takes hours to open. Files with correct references open very fast, but if only one reference is lost, it takes eternity to ask for the correct path. Instead of asking fast where the file is with the message "file not found", the program freezes. Reference documents option is correct to a local drive. Solidworks Explorer is also very slow too.
Regards,
Ricardo J.

RE: References - too slow
How large of an assembly are we talking about?
I would suggest after you get your top level assemblies open and all file located, to perform a Find References and copy all those files to a new, homogeneous location.

How large ??
When I open an assembly of 2 pieces with 1 lost reference, it takes 3 to 5 minutos to inform that the reference was not found and ask for correct path. I really mean the smallest assemblies with 1 lost reference. Let´s say we have 10 lost references, it takes 30 minutes to wait Solidworks ask 10 times.
The network is very very fast for all other 20 computers in the network. I use Solidworks in 3 machines. The 3 have this problem, but other softwares and files run very fast (Office, Explorer navigation, Autocad, etc).
RE: References - too slow
Did you change any other hardware when you switched servers? At a previous company that I worked for, we had a severe bottleneck at one of the hubs they'd installed.
Did you change any of the drive letters on the network?

RE: References - too slow
1)PDM: I heard about it but never used. I will try it.
2)File references: We are doing it, but this operation takes also a long time (related problem): hours or never. We are doing it when possible.
3)Tools/Options/Search File location is unchecked.
4)Tools/Options/File Locations/Ref. Docs: I specified an empty local folder "c:\temp". So, it will not take time to search this folder.
5)Hub is not a problems: all 20 machines in the network are running fast. Even large assemblies without lost references open in a few seconds. It happens only when 1 or more lost reference is found.
6)Drive Letter: we dont use drive letter, only direct path like "\\server\workingfolder\machinename"
Other clues:
1) When I open a file in the local drive with any lost reference, it is very fast. It asks me the correct path instantly. When I open a file in the network with lost reference, it takes forever.
2)My server was Win2k Server, now it is Win 2003 Server. Is there any specific ajustment in 2003 to work with Solid works ?
Regards to all.
RE: References - too slow
You shouldn't need to do anything here.
This will probably work right once you get #4 corrected.
I don't think you understand what the Referenced Documents are. Read up on Referenced Documents, I think this will fix your problems. Unless it's just you and one computer, you need to set the Referenced Documents to be the directory (or directories) where your SolidWorks files are. When opening an assembly, SW will first look in these directories for each of the component files...You want SW to look in these directories.

What happens if you try moving the files for one of the broken assemblies (with all of its components) into a directory of its own on the server?
