wood truss free body diagram analysis

(OP)
Does anyone know where I can find information on how to do the free body diagram analysis of a wood truss (for a detached garage) either by hand or using a user friendly, inexpensive software package in order to calculate the axial forces in the individual members?

Design of Wood Structures Fifth Edition by Breyer, Fridley, Pollock and Cobeen has some good examples.
I'm sure a basic statics book would have something as well.

RE: wood truss free body diagram analysis

If you have a good cad program, you can use summation of forces graphical method (cremona)...

RE: wood truss free body diagram analysis

Get the reaction on both support.
Get reaction at connection of top chords just if it were a simply supported beam loaded evenly.
Figure out the forces starting from the support using static.

Sum of Fx=0
Sum of Fy=0

You have not indicated whether you are trying to analyze an existing truss or design a new truss.

If you are trying to analyze an existing truss constructed using light gauge truss plates, you are probably better off contacting a truss supplier for assistance.

In many cases with wood trusses the joint strength controls the design.  Although I can analyze the trusses in my garage,  I would have to do a lot more research in order, to evaluate the light gauge truss plate joints.

Specifically, how would you analyze the heel joint with an eccentric connection?

RE: wood truss free body diagram analysis

Well, he/she only asked about the force at each member.  Didnt mention anything about the connection  :).

RE: wood truss free body diagram analysis

Thats right, but eccentric joints generate bending forces.
