Substitute for vegetable fiber gasket

Substitute for vegetable fiber gasket

Substitute for vegetable fiber gasket

(OP)
I have an control oil system. Normal pressure is 150 psig and 200degrees F. Oil is used for controlling valves on a Turbine. The oil is always found on the floor (10-15gal over 3 months). Need to find a substitute for vegetable fiber gasket. Anybody has any suggestion. THanks

RE: Substitute for vegetable fiber gasket

UncleSid is right on with his recommendation.  Expanded PTFE is a low-stress-to-seal material with relatively high compressive strength and is 100% compatible with just about everything- including petroleum based and synthetic oils.  It is expensive though.  A comparable material is Inertex SQ-S sheet gaskets.  Also 100% expanded PTFE, however not as temperature resistant as the GORE material.  At your turbine control valve oil temperatures, it works just fine.

bopsyseng, there ought to be any number of suitable substitutes, contact Garlock, Flexitallic, Lamons, J.M Clipper (or others) apps engineers. They are all on the Web.

Mike

RE: Substitute for vegetable fiber gasket

SnTMan- you might think so, but the typical power station turbine lube oil piping arrangements, and properties of the oils really make this a difficult application for conventional non-asbestos, paper type gaskets.  Expanded PTFE works better/longer than other materials evaluated.  Been there, done that.
