Questions about general Axis & Boundary Concepts.

Questions about general Axis & Boundary Concepts.

Questions about general Axis & Boundary Concepts.

(OP)
I'm doing an online course by ASME.  I am having a bit of trouble with some basic concepts.

Just to get things straight.

Axis Concept is a positional orientation?  gives you a virtual cylinder of available axis's?

And Boundary concept is perfect shape at maximum material condition?  Basically the outter most tolerance of a part?

I have read the code (and nearly fallen asleep for every page!) and just having some trouble identifiying a propper definition for both Axis and Boundary concepts.

RE: Questions about general Axis & Boundary Concepts.

If you're having trouble interpreting ASME Y14.5M then I would seek out a work book that breaks it down to simple terms.

First thing to really understand is - The Taylor Principle, also called the Envelope Principle, defined within ASME Y14.5M - 1994 by rule #1 defines the size and form limits for an individual feature of size.

Never argue with an idiot. They'll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience every time.

RE: Questions about general Axis & Boundary Concepts.

Can you give an example of what your dilemma is? You've stated your understanding of the definitions fairly simply although I don't know if I'm tracking with what you're trying to convey because I've never heard of "Axis Concept" or "Boundary Concept". What you are referring to as "Boundary Concept" is in fact General Rule #1 reduced to it's lowest common denominator. In the standard, general rule #1 is fully explained, just make sure you understand the meaning of local size as well as all the rest of the "sizes". Check 1.3.24 - 1.3.30 in the standard. I'm not sure what you mean by "Axis Concept" unless you are talking about positional tolerances in which case you should understand that the tolerance zone is not always a cylinder. I hope this helps you out.

Powerhound;

When you were at Taji, did you know MAJ Splinter(EN)?

I went up to Taji a few times; worked south of there mostly though.

My apologies for being off-topic.

RE: Questions about general Axis & Boundary Concepts.

Hi rltw,
I was there Mar04 - Mar05. I didn't know your friend, sorry. I only went south of Taji once, to the green zone in Baghdad, then I went to far east Iraq to a republican guard camp that we re-named Butler Range. All my other travel was north on route Senator, mostly to Balad (Anaconda). We can go to an off-topic thread if you want to discuss more.

RE: Questions about general Axis & Boundary Concepts.

Sure, I'd like to take this to an off-opic forum - I'm curious how a SSG came to work with Mastercam and Inventor... I'm sure it's very interesting.  I was up in Taji while you were for a couple hours to pick up a paramedic from KBR.

rltw,
go to www.emastercam.com and sign up. I'll leave a post there in the off-topic forum with your handle in the subject line. You can obtain my e-mail address from there and we can chat about Iraq there.
