Black start Operation of GT Driven Compressor

Black start Operation of GT Driven Compressor

Black start Operation of GT Driven Compressor

(OP)
Can anyone describe the typical black start operation and control philosophy of GT driven Compressor.  Also, please suggest any reading material for greater understanding.

RE: Black start Operation of GT Driven Compressor

if the GT driving the compressor is an industrial type GT, not an Aircraft Derivative, the black start of the GT is just using the DC auxiliaries instead of the AC auxiliaries.
So... the emergency DC Lube oil pump is used AND there is an alternator (convert DC to AC) to drive the sparkplugs
when the speed reaches about 40% the main lube oil pump and cooling water pump and fin-fan coolers (packaged units) are driven by the auxiliary gearbox and normal operation resumes.

google black-start and plenty of documents show up.

RE: Black start Operation of GT Driven Compressor

I don't fully undertsnad the question: 'black start' is usually used to describe a condition where auxiliary power from an external source, usually a transmission grid, is unavailable to provide start-up power to a generating plant. Black-start-capable sites will have some means of raising auxiliary power without support from the transmission grid. The first machine to start is normally a diesel set which can provide sufficient power to allow a a turbine to reach cranking speed. In a large station that turbine may in turn provide auxiliary power to much larger sets.

Where does a GT-driven compressor fit into the black start situation?

RE: Black start Operation of GT Driven Compressor

packaged units in the middle of nowhere driving pipeline compressors and operated remotely could use black-start procedures to start on the DC pump.
at operating speed the accessory gear box drives all the auxiliaries: main lube oil, hydraulic pump, cooling fans.

this technology is very old... today the higher power outputs require external electrical supply mostly for the cooling water system.

Lube oil/Control oil still driven by accessory gearbox.

ooops sorry... forgot to mention... these installations have a small AC power supply for compartment lighting and the battery chargers, but not 3 phase installation to drive a pump for instance.

RE: Black start Operation of GT Driven Compressor

The mantra is ....Always contact the maker first.
Different makers have different philosphies on cooling, lubrication, operations and control, and of course there is the application and configuration of the system.

You may have some luck by contacting Rolls Royce at their site. They tend to make a lot of educational materials available.
