EFI controllers

EFI controllers

EFI controllers

(OP)
Hi all,

I am helping a small Swedish company with sourcing lower cost parts for their injected DOHC Vee twin industrial engines and one thing that they are paying way too much for is their EFI controller. Since most of their current applications require a fairly constant rpm, no complex mapping is required-- just start/idle and run up to operating rpm.

Any suggestions for where to find an EFI controller (possibly with ignition built in?) One application we are looking into is for light aircraft (kit planes) so light, simple and reliable are all important.

Thanks for the help and anyone needing an 80-120hp 50kg engine, let me know and I'll send details.

RE: EFI controllers

There's the MEFI controller from GM. These are used on the Chevrolet Performance 350/502 Ramjet engines, and by Mercury Marine on their Mercruiser line. The later ones are fairly sophisticated and reliable.

Thanks Fabrico,

Do they sell this to other OEM suppliers and any idea of the price and who to talk to. Maybe we're too small at just a few hundred units a year. cheers, derek

RE: EFI controllers

Derek, you probably don't want to go this way but have a look at Megasquirt

Hi Greg,

They also have a new minisquirt coming out soon which is the smaller version of the Megasquirt 2 (which is very powerful, cheap and has ignition mapping too.) I think it is an excellent system but there must be something off the shelf which is simpler than building your own and still be a few hundred $. Since we will need two on the aircraft version the price and size/weight are important.

cheers, derek

RE: EFI controllers

There is one called VEMS. But if it is for a aircraft I think I would not mind that it had the most reliable equipment to keep it in the air, cost coming 2nd in my quest for an EFI controller. Something about my life I would like to keep.

RE: EFI controllers

I agree that for aircraft the reliability is absolutely the first priority which is why we want to have two EFI/ignition controllers and two separate systems for redundancy.

Price often has little to do with reliability. We would like a simple system as it is less likely to fail. Lower price allows us to have two systems and still keep the price down. We are competing with carburettors and fliers are conservative (or dead.) The microsquirt (not mini, sorry) looks good but has not been tested enough yet.

cheers, derek

RE: EFI controllers

Have a look at the Haltech range (www.haltech.com).  They have a wide range but more importantly they will often provide significant technical support to unusual projects.

Microtec offer a reasonable price for good quality engine management computers.

Thanks both Pat and Pete,

The microtech (www.microtech-efi.com) and Haltech are a bit more expensive (retail) than the controllers we are already using but I'll find out what OEM deals they can offer. I'll get a Microsquirt beta model to test as they are small and the price is well below the others.

Try Control Systems, Inc.  They have developed all sorts of engine managment systems from little one cylinders to V8s.  You can find more information about them at,

RE: EFI controllers

I work for an EFI company in China, and we make LOW cost systems. Any interest?

RE: EFI controllers

I see powercommander's an add on so sds or equal nearer $1000 may be best you can do.  I'd also like to find a cheap alpha n unit.
