Custom Tapped Holes

Custom Tapped Holes

Custom Tapped Holes

(OP)
Hi Everyone,
I have been working on creating a new set of tapped holes for our industry.  We have many unusual threads that we have to use.  For example, I am starting my list with a 9/64-40 tap.  I did the part of creating a new list by using the "How do I create my own Hole Wizard standards Database? FAQ559-1183" FAQ.  I then added the specs for my 9/64-40 hole.  Now when I try to place my hole, I get an information box that says "The dimension value 0 is out of range.  The old value 3.3 will be restored"  I can tell by the 3.3 (which is the tap drill for an M4 tap) that it is looking for the tap drill size.  So, I see that the lower part of the Hole Specification menu has a section at the bottom for Custom Sizing that includes a box for inputting tap drill size.  When I do this, and input 2.9 for the tap drill size I get an Information box that says "Error: The tap drill diameter (2.900000) cannot be larger than the thread diameter ()".  I have not left any of the value boxes blank when creating my hole in the database (per the FAQ above).

What am I missing?  Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Tim

RE: Custom Tapped Holes

Perhaps you made the tap 9/64 in radius instead of diameter?

RE: Custom Tapped Holes

I used diameter dimensions for all fields.  2.9mm for tap drill, 3.6mm for hole size.  Pitch is the only one not a diameter at 0.64mm. Then I filled in the other boxes with data as close as I can figure without having specific information on them.  They are sewing machine screw threads, so there is very little spec. data available for them.

RE: Custom Tapped Holes

I have seen this when the drill tip angle was set to 0 degrees. Could that be it?

Ken

RE: Custom Tapped Holes

Are you applying the units (mm) when typing the drill sizes?

cheers

I am doing the thread as "through all".  But, even with a depth, I did use the degrees of 118deg. (I tried others as well). But, with thru all, I don't need an angle.  And yes, I am using the units.  I am posting a screen shot of what I am getting.  Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tim

RE: Custom Tapped Holes

Have you tried using smaller size just to see if it works? Pick a really small size first (say .5mm) and then increase until it stops working.

cheers

Hey Limey,
It will even do it at 0.01mm tap drill size.
