Temperature Limit for Stainless Steel 316
Temperature Limit for Stainless Steel 316
(OP)
Can anyone tell me if there are any issues in designing/fabricating pressure equipment (small vessels and piping items) using stainless steel 316 (not 316L) for the following:-
The mechanical codes are either ASME VIII div1 or ASME B16.3.
Design Temps: Two Options a)538 Deg. C. b) 590 Deg. C
Fluid passing thro the equipment is steam only.
Thanks in advance.

One point about SS in steam. We had some 316 saturated steam lines that weren't properly supported allowing some low spots. This coupled with the operators inability to operate this boiler without periodic carryover caused us some grief due to corrosion and cracking in these lines.

The ASME VIII code contains limits for usage of various materials within the notes of the Allowable stress tables.
590 degrees C (~1100F)is within the operating range for austenitic 316/316L stainless materials.
See this website for limits on carbon and alloy steel materials:

316 can be used to 1500 F but has little strength.
