piping drawings

piping drawings

(OP)
I recently found the following sentences on the records of lessons learned during the process piping installation of a large industrial project:

Engineer should provide stuffing drawings for piperack erection.

Field run piping (shown on stuffing drawings) should also be shown on isometrics with dotted line.

Does anybody has a clue about "stuffed drawings"?  What does it mean?

Thank you for the help.

Yes!
A "Rack Stuffing Drawing" was a layout sketch issued early in the project soon after the pipeway layout activity.
This drawing was not normally considered one of the formal Client deliverables.  It was considered an informal drawing issued only to construction.
Construction used this drawing for a dual benifit.
First- it allowed construction to load the lower deck of a multi-deck rack with the proper pipe as they they built up the steel (or concrete) levels.
Seconed- In a tight construction site where raw pipe laydown area would be at a premium they could stuff (load) the rack with the right pipe as it arrived at the jobsite.
The Field run straight pipe was shown solid.  The rest of the pipe continuation, intended for shop fabrication was shown dotted.
Hope this helps.

Thank you very much Pennpiper!  Your explanation was very helpful.  Although, according to some oltimer Brits engineers, the term was also used in the shipping industry.  To describe the detail drawings of the stuffing boxes or pipes going thru the ship's hull.

RE: piping drawings

Your original question used terminology and phrasing that does not suggest ship building.
i.e.: "process piping installation of a large industrial project" , "drawings for piperack erection", "Field run piping" and "isometrics with dotted line".
These all lead me to consider a project on land.

Pennpiper,

Yes, the job was a land project and your definition fits perfectly.  One last question is are these drawings prepared by the Contractor or by the project's Designer?

I would think that stuffing drawings are prepared by those who perform the job, because they set the fabrication and erection sequences and influence the material delivery schedule.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

RE: piping drawings

In my experience it was the well experienced piping designer on the project who prepared the "rack stuffing drawing".  It was also done pretty early in the design phase.

200652,

You should start a new thread.

Your question does not seem to be related to the original post here.
