solidworks measure tool help

solidworks measure tool help

solidworks measure tool help

(OP)
if i sketch a sheet metal u chanel for example 100mm long with flanges 20mm high each end (all dimentions outside) then turn it into sheet metal part.

i then want to check my sizes after solidworks has folded the part , as the part changes because of the bends/folds.

if i try to measure the outside flange (the 20mm leg) verticaly  the measure tool does not seem to be able to measure this because of the outside bend rad???  it measures from top of leg and wants to measure inside rad giving incorect size.

if i try dimentions  i have the dimention size on screen getting in the way of a clear view.

thank you

RE: solidworks measure tool help

You can select multiple entities using the Ctrl key.  Select one edge of the upper side of the leg, hold down Ctrl, and select the face you want to measure its distance to.

Why? The formed part leg lengths should not change size because of inserting bends.

Is there a reason you are not using the Sheet Metal function. i.e. Starting off in the sheet metal mode rather than inserting bends to a solid.

thanks all still puzzled.
i selected sketch/front face drew a vertical line and a   hrizontal line  so i have (L) and checked size using measure and dimention tools and set to 50mm v 200 hor.

k factor 5mm thickness 6mm  used u shaped sm bend tool but seem to end up with differant sizes in finished part to what i require (50mm X200 ) outside dims.

using measure on formed part screen ? or face i still cannot get measure to measure the vertical distance of 50mm bend.   printing bend seems to give overall length of long side as 173mm and vertical leg as 46mm approx?

not sure how to actually exit sketch mode?

thank you

RE: solidworks measure tool help

Check the SM bend options. You can change the side the material is added to the sketch.

RE: solidworks measure tool help

If you have a sketch open and want to exit from it, just click on the Sketch icon again. When a sketch is opened the Sketch icon automatically changes to Exit Sketch.

BTW, you do not need to use the CTRL key with the measure tool when making multiple selections.

As for the printing, I can only guess that the scale is not 1:1.

Can you post a screen shot with the measure tool being used?

RE: solidworks measure tool help

Try selecting faces to measure distance instead of edges or vertices.  Selecting at least one flat face will prompt the measure tool to display "normal distance".

Another method is to place temporary planes and/or axes as needed to measure distances.  Planes and axes are infinite (even though display length is finite).  this can yield better results for determining normal distance to plane or axis.

I could be the world's greatest underachiever, if I could just learn to apply myself.

hi all found out where i was going wrong changing x-y cord values rather than distance.

however using getting started pdf first example sm a u channel  80x140x80mm   use base flange give thickness as 3mm  fold up  gives finish sizes as  83mm 146mm 83mm  so the software has put material thickness outside.

using a rectangle /base flange to give thickness and using edge fold to fold up each end. if i want my finished size for eg   flanges 20mm os overhall width 100mm os trying inside /outside options cannot get my required sizes.

is there a way to drag/change the part dimentions only can find sketch edit, or how to easily create part if using 3mm material.

thank you

47street ... Is English your first language? I don't mean to be rude, but your lack of punctuation, capitalisation and grammar make it very hard to interpret your post.

You should be able to control the position of material and bends using the options in the Sheet Metal manager. I suggest you experiment with the all the options to learn what they do.

RE: solidworks measure tool help

Maybe you are using the wrong factor - try using K factor for your SM part.
