BEARING CAPACITY OF ANNULAR MAT FOUNDATION

BEARING CAPACITY OF ANNULAR MAT FOUNDATION

BEARING CAPACITY OF ANNULAR MAT FOUNDATION

(OP)
i AM INTERESTED IN COMPUTING THE BEARING CAPACITY OF A ANNULAR MAT FOUNDATION. CAN ANYONE SUGGEST ME WITH TECHNICAL MATEERS IN THIS REGARDS. I GOT SOME REFERENCES ABOUT COMPUTING THE SETTLEMENT BUT NOT THE BEARING CAPACITY.
PLEASE DO THE NEEDFUL AT THE EARLIEST.THANKS

RE: BEARING CAPACITY OF ANNULAR MAT FOUNDATION

I think more information is needed:  Just what is an annular mat foundation?  If it is a circular mat with a hole in it, then you'd need to provide dimensions - you know 100 ft in diameter with an 80 ft diameter hole.

My bet is this problem has more to do with settlement than "bearing capacity".  If you found a bearing pressure calculation for a large circle with a hole in it, you'd likely need to run the calculations for the soils within the "seat of settlement" anyhow.  You should look at Meyerhof for more information on foundation bearing capacity for unusual loading conditions.

Thanks a lot for your help f-d. Regarding the definition of annular mat foundation, I think this mat with a large outer dia having width of annular mat being in the range of 2 to 4 meter. But I need a generalised solution irrespective of the size/dimension of the annular mat foundation. Ofcourse, if the size of hole is very small, then it can be considered to be circular one. Regarding Meyerhof, can you please help me if those materials are available with you or for that matter with any other person.

RE: BEARING CAPACITY OF ANNULAR MAT FOUNDATION

Just to be clear, what you are calculating is the bearing capacity of the soils when the load is applied from a circular foundation.  I hate to say this but there is no "answer" to your question.  If the diamter is real large and the width is proportiatly narrow, then it will act as a strip foundation.  As you stated, if the size of the hole is small then it's a circular foundation with some stress reduction owing to the loss of contact area.

I get cited references from interlibrary loan.  I suggest you contact your State library (if you're in the US) or through a university.
