Duplicating a drawing outside of TCe

Duplicating a drawing outside of TCe

Duplicating a drawing outside of TCe

(OP)
Hello again folks...

My crew is the first in the company to deploy NX (version 4), and we are running outside of TeamCenter at this point.

I have figured out how to clone an assembly, that is, create a duplicate assy, in a new folder, with some or all of the components copied and renamed.  This allows me to create new variations of the original assembly where some parts are new and have different PNs.

What I'd like to do is extend this so that components that have drawings associated with them are *also* copied/renamed and have their internal pointers set to the new component.

If you just perform a "Save As" on a drawing in session, what you get is a new drawing pointing to the same component as the original drawing.  How does one copy and rename both the component and the drawing?  And can this approach work at the assembly level?  I'd like to be able to take a top-level assy and clone all the sub-assys, components and drawings.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

RE: Duplicating a drawing outside of TCe

To do a save-as you should first open the part file, drawing file (assuming master model method), and any assembly files that the part is used in. 'Save-as' the part file and now it will prompt you to also save as the drawing file and any assemblies you have open that the part is used in. Enter a new name for any files you want (sounds like all of them in your case) and you will end up with copies of the drawing and assembly that point to the new 'saved as' component.

OK, that works perfectly.  Thanks so much for the prompt reply.
