Valve type for release of high pressure

Valve type for release of high pressure

(OP)
What is the common desired valve type for releasing high pressure?

I have a system to pressure test assemblies in the oil and gas industry, and I’m getting mixed information from valve suppliers on selection of a valve to dump the pressure after the test is complete.

Max 15,000psi / water or gas test / Max 1 gallon of water thru dump valve.

Some say a ball valve is to fast a release to dump the pressure for safety concerns, while others say a needle valve will just wash out to quickly. I'm currently using an Autoclave Enginners angle needle valve, works great, but does wash-out after 40 - 50 tests.

Any comments / thoughts?

Thanks
Dusty

Consider a ball valve operated open/closed with a choke downstream for the pressure drop.

For steam letdown, we have used CCI tortuous path valves. Expensive. Very expensive.

RE: Valve type for release of high pressure

OK, 15000 psi is really high - likely eliminating any ball valve.

EYECONZ,
Since you are passing a small volume intermittantly the Autoclave Engineers needle valve, or similar, is probably the most cost effective. I suggest you talk with the supplier and see if you can get hardfaced (Stellite) seats and plugs. This will increase the service life cosiderably and reduce you repair and overhead costs.

A back pressure regulator can also be used :)

Be sure to consider the noise, vibration and JT effects.
