Refractory Lined Vessel
Refractory Lined Vessel
(OP)
Does anyone know where refractory lined vessels are adressed by ASME code, if at all? I am specifically concerned about what design temperatrure should be used for the base metal. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

RE: Refractory Lined Vessel
If necessary, the metal temperature shall be determined by computation or by measurement from equipment in service under equivalent operating conditions
You should know the various heat transfer variables and be able to calculate the wall temperature (hopefully conservatively!) using some reasonably simple textbook equations. Alternatively, find another vessel operating with similar fluids at similar temperatures with the same refractory and take a measurement on a hot summer day.

RE: Refractory Lined Vessel
We try to design where we keep the uninsulated skin on any equipment below 140F. This normally allows us to use CS for the shell. One example is where we have CS as the MOC on some large equipment operating at a design temperature of 3100F and 1 psig. This is due to having the vessel lined with 15" of refractory as it would be impractical to design for higher skin temperature and maintain any sense of integrity.
