Workmanship specification for arc welding

Workmanship specification for arc welding

Workmanship specification for arc welding

(OP)
I am creating a drawing for a structural bracket and would like to include a statement to control the workmanship of the welding section (done with arc welding).  I have difficulty to find out the appropriate standard references I can put onto the drawing?  I would like to know if there are any canadian and american standards that I can put onto the drawing.  Thanks.

RE: Workmanship specification for arc welding

What is the base metal and what is your application?

Consider:
AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code/Steel for carbon steel,
AWS D1.2 Structural Welding Code/Aluminum for Aluminum
AWS D1.6 Structural Welding Code/Stainless Steel for austenitic stainless steel.
AWS D17.1 for aerospace structural components

AWS has other standards for structural sheet metal, earthmoving equipment, mill cranes, material handling equipment, etc. That's why I asked about the application.

"All welding, including welding procedure specifications and welder qualifications, shall be in accordance with AWS D1.X Structural Welding Code/XXXX" The "X" would be substituted with the proper code and base metal. You should include a specific year for the code you select. You can get that by going to the AWS web site. You should also state whether the bracket is for a static or cyclicly loaded structure.

Good luck - Al

Best regards - Al

Thanks a lot Gtaw.

I would put something like "Welding process shall be conforming to AWS D1.1 or equivalent" in the drawing.

It is a mild steel (low carbon stee) AISI 1020 welded structural steel (44W or 50W) and with possible cyclic loading (vibration cause by fluttering and structure).  I have never read this type of welding spec. Just curious about what does it cover?  Does it cover the control of welding process and inspection pass/fail criteria.

Also, does it mandate any specific type test (tensile, NDT) and also inspection program?

Regards,

bgoo,
I would leave out the equivalent part so you have a specific requirement. ( no gray areas )
I took my C.W.I. to D1.1 and it covers all the items you mentioned as well static or dynamic structures.

RE: Workmanship specification for arc welding

D1.1, at 500+ pages, is much more than just a workmanship standard.
