New mould design?

New mould design?

New mould design?

(OP)
I am trying to redesign a mould for making rubber to AL bonded parts in a press.
Does anyone have any useful links to help?
Is it possible to inject mould rubber?

RE: New mould design?

Find a local company that does compression or transfer molding of rubber, and talk to them.

RE: New mould design?

True rubber is normally compression or transfer moulded.

Many elastomers or "synthetic rubbers" can be injection moulded

Knish,

To answer your 2nd question, yes you can injection mold rubber although it is not done very often in an overmolding application.  I would go with compression if the design allows for it.

RE: New mould design?

Presumably you want good adhesion.  Rubber does not adhere well to aluminum, which is one reason most tire molds are aluminum.

For good adhesion of rubber to aluminum parts, the aluminum is usually copper plated.
This is also true for steel, e.g., wire used in the tire bead is " usually coated with Bronze (Cu : Sn) or Brass Coating (Cu: Zn) for achieving adhesion with rubber." -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tire_manufacturing

Another technique is to roughen the aluminum surface and use a bonding agent.  See

& 'Chemlok Rubber-to-Substrate Adhesives'  at http://www.lord.com/tabid/3261/Default.aspx
Suitable adhesive is available for coating the metal insert prior to molding the rubber.
