mirroring sheet metal parts

mirroring sheet metal parts

Is there a way to make a mirrored image of a sheet metal part- so that i can have a left-hand and right-hand part?  I'm running into problems when i use the mirror command.  SW office professional 2006 insists that the mirrored body be merged with the existing body.  This problem does not exist with regular parts.

I found a work-around where i complete the mirror and then extrude-cut the original part.  Is there a better way to do this?

RE: mirroring sheet metal parts

The easiest way is to put the part in an assembly, pick a plane, and mirror.  Insert > Mirror Components > make sure you have the check-box checked for "Mirrored component has left/right version".

RE: mirroring sheet metal parts

adampunch ... What service pack are you using?

I am running SW06-SP5 and it will not let me select a body to create a mirror of an SM part. Also it will not let me select a face to mirror about ... it has to be a plane.

Can anyone else do this with SW06-SP5?

cheers

RE: mirroring sheet metal parts

Yeah, that's what the SW06 SP5.0 means... pipe  By the way picking a face to mirror (in an assembly) instead of a plane like I said above works also.

smcadman- thanks for the tip.  It works out better to mirror the part in the assembly- this way i don't have to update 2 different files if the design of the part changes.

CBL- i'm using SP1.  I could only mirror about an edge face (the thin face of the sheet) and not a main face of the part.  SW would not let me mirror about another plane out in space.

RE: mirroring sheet metal parts

Just curious why you didn't do this in part mode.
Click face/plane then Insert/Mirror Part. I'm on 05
but it works just fine with sheetmetal parts...
