hellow everyone, emimec here.my problem is i am thread rolling 304 s/s parts for a customer,10-32 unc by 2.9 inches long .on a manual capstan lathe ,spindle speed 750 revs.my thread rolls dont last very long 800 parts per set.this makes the job very expensive.what can i do to increase parts per set.

RE: thread rolling stainless steel

What materia lare the rolls? and what oil are you using?
The speed sounds a bit high for stainless, but I need to think about that.

hellow edstainless, thanks for your response.the rolls are made from M42 my cutting oil is ECO COOL MB,soluable cutting oil.maybe i should reduce my spindle speed and use neat cutting oil.what do you think.regards emimec...

RE: thread rolling stainless steel

I would go to cutting oil.  Stainless will gall and smear if you give it a chance.
Tool material should be fine.  Maybe you should look at the surface finish.
The lower speed will help.  You don't have to go real slow, just down a bit.

RE: thread rolling stainless steel

I agree with Ed, you should switch to a straight mineral-oil based lubricant that has been compounded with EP additives.  The galling tendency of stainless is just too much under the extreme pressure of thread rolling to use soluble-type lubricants.
