Problems importing Acad 2007 dwgs into SEV18

Problems importing Acad 2007 dwgs into SEV18

Problems importing Acad 2007 dwgs into SEV18

(OP)
I've been tasked with making models of a part "detailed" in a AutoCAD 2007 Drawing. Currently I'm using Solid Edge V18 (with all the updates loaded) and I'm finding there are a couple of problems.

1.)SEV18 will not read an AutoCAD 2007 drawing. Within AutoCAD 2007, I need to save the drawing in question as an AutoCAD 2004 DXF and THEN open it with SE.

After that it should have been a simple matter to open it up, select "SYMBOL.DFT (so no borders pop up) and cut and paste between this "draft" and my sketch/profile.

2.)Unfortunately I've found that when the ACAD drawing is imported into the SE Draft file, it is severely reduced in scale. And it is not a constant amount, and I have a feeling it may not be proportionately scaled. Just a note here, these are not metric ACAD drawings.

I've never encountered this problem before having to work with AutoCAD 2007. In the past, I've switched freely back and forth between AutoCAD 2002 and SE V18 with ease, and without the drastic and unwanted scaling of geometry.

Normally I'd bag the entire process and re-generate the profile in SE from scratch. But this AutoCAD drawing contains some of the weirdest curves and worst dimensioning I've ever encountered. And in the interest of time, I'd prefer to import the profile, add some constraints and get on with my work.

Does anyone have a better way, or some tips for importing drawings made with AutoCAD 2007?

I do have a copy of Inventor V11 on my work computer (which I have used only under the most extreme duress). Does importing the Acad drawing into Inventor, and extracting a "profile" to then import into SE sound like a valid strategy? If so,....anyone know how to do this? :>)

Thank you,
Dominic Greco

RE: Problems importing Acad 2007 dwgs into SEV18

Hi,

the imported .dwg or .dxf is scaled by a factor of 1/1000
this is a known problem with V18/Sp7. You should update
to SP8 which will fix this bug.

AFAIK SE V18 can only read ACAD 2004 and below

Also check your import options, the units should match the dwg or dxf file units. It's not uncommon to find a factor of 25.4 incorrectly applied in the conversion if they don't match.
