Allowable Stresses for Old/Discontinued Materials

Allowable Stresses for Old/Discontinued Materials

Allowable Stresses for Old/Discontinued Materials

(OP)
I am currently involed in project were I am required to rerate a few old vessels, some as old as 1957.  Of course some of these materials are no longer made any more.  Can anyone tell me were the best place is to locate a reference to give the allowable stresses for materials dating back to this time?  Any direction is greatly appreciated.

RE: Allowable Stresses for Old/Discontinued Materials

Yes. The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors

https://www.nationalboard.org/nationalboard/Default.aspx

maintains a complete historical library of ASME B&PV Code books. If you need actual allowable stress values for materials based on the year of construction, you can obtain this information for a fee from the National Board. You need to make a list of the MOC and supply that information to the National Board. I have done this before.

RE: Allowable Stresses for Old/Discontinued Materials

FYI
Rerating using the 3.5 safety factor (new design allowable stress) is not permitted for these vessels per the NBIC.

RE: Allowable Stresses for Old/Discontinued Materials

If you have only a few, and state the materials and temperatures, some of us might give you the allowable tensile stress for ASME VIII (I presume) vessel of that vintage... but you should keep looking around 'cause I might be your client and ask you to show me a copy of your code reference since I wouldn't want you performing a design based on anonymous internet based sources...
