15-5 SS Equivalent
15-5 SS Equivalent
(OP)
Now use a brake spring in a high friction, high heat application. Material is 1065-1075 spring steel, Rc 42-46. In some high usage applications, spring life is inadequate.
Asked spring supplier to quote making the spring of 15-5 CRES. They are having a problem sourcing the material which is a .063 thick x .125 inch wide.
Could someone recommend alternate materials.
Thanks,

RE: 15-5 SS Equivalent
A more readily available material for springs would be 17-7 PH SS. This material is commonly used for springs of all types.

All giving it a longer life in a spring application.
RE: 15-5 SS Equivalent
The current carbon steel spring dwg shows a range.
RE: 15-5 SS Equivalent
Make sure that you reference specifications for the heat treatment. Use AMS specs if you have to.

RE: 15-5 SS Equivalent
The spring mfg said "spring temper" 17-7 ph was used with no other description.
Would there be a standard heat treat for spring temper or is that variable depending on what you want?
Thanks,
RE: 15-5 SS Equivalent
If they suggest a spec go buy a copy of it and read it. You need to know the rules.
