Impact on Cage

Impact on Cage

Impact on Cage

(OP)
I am looking to do an impact calc on a retaining cage and need help:

Problem: projectile hits cage at a known velocity.  I know the velocity and mass at point of impact and need to know the resulting force on the structure.

Does anybody have any ideas?  We typically do this kind of analysis with an ANSYS dynamics package but I want to do simple hand calcs for a rough idea.  I was told people in this forum might help, but the design is actually used for subsea piping protection.

RE: Impact on Cage

If you can work out the time over which the impact takes place then you are home and dry. This time is typically taken to be half a cycle of the crude frequency given by f=1/2/pi*sqrt(k/m)

Also see FAQ404-1245 and do a search on impact forces.

Cheers
