Polymer vs Porcelain in transformer bushings

Polymer vs Porcelain in transformer bushings

Polymer vs Porcelain in transformer bushings

(OP)
This is related to the already old question-concern:

What is better for a 13.8 KV/4.16KV transformer bushings: porcelain or polymer???

Regards

RE: Polymer vs Porcelain in transformer bushings

Porcelain is superior than polymer for this application.

Porcelaine is less succeptible to aging, sun UV, and thermal variation. Also porcelaine have long term performance better performance record than polymer insulator.

RE: Polymer vs Porcelain in transformer bushings

We performed line maintenance on a tranmission line H-frame structure approximately 18 years of age.

After removing the conductor from the porcelain insulator attachments, 3 out of 4 of the insulators 'fell apart' in the linemen's hands from cracks.

We never stock porcelain insulators any longer.

Also, polymer insulators can withstand gunshots much better than porcelain insulators.

If you do buy polymer insulators, make certain the core fiberglass rod is boron free.

RE: Polymer vs Porcelain in transformer bushings

Bushings are different than insulators.  I'd stick with porcelain because I'd be concerned about leaking.  There were many problems with water leaking in early polymer arresters.  I'd wait until polymer bushings have been in use for a few more years.
