Welding 12 Ga Material

Welding 12 Ga Material

Welding 12 Ga Material

(OP)
Fabricating a rectangular frame with light gage structural C-Sections, 45 degree mitered at corners.

AISC 9th TABLE J2.4 lists a minimum fillet for up "To 1/4 inclusive".  Is an 1/8" all-around weld to much for 12 ga material?

Thank you ...

RE: Welding 12 Ga Material

1/8" weld is acceptable with 12 GA material.

RE: Welding 12 Ga Material

We do the same size welding here.

RE: Welding 12 Ga Material

Instead of AWS D1.1, welds shall conform to AWS D1.3 for welding sheet steel.

RE: Welding 12 Ga Material

Use the AISI code for cold-formed steel, not the AISC.  Note also that because the corners of the studs have a radius, you will be using a flare bevel weld or a flare V weld depending on your connection.

RE: Welding 12 Ga Material

12 ga. sheet metal (galvanized) is 0.1084 inches thick.  If you are welding a fillet on the cut edge, you cannot use the full leg of a 1/8" fillet (reinforcement not allowed on fillet)

RE: Welding 12 Ga Material

I have three questions.

1. Can any of the prequalified joints in D1.3 Sec 3 be used?

2. What will the welding symbol look like?

3. Will the welders be qualified per Sec 4 of D1.3?
