File references &$@#!

(OP)
Our users have been using an old copied parts directory.  I want to switch the parts used to our main copied parts directory however, when I try to replace a part it says that I cannot replace a part with another part with the exact same name but a different location.

I'm starting to hate how SolidWorks keeps file references.

Is there a different workaround for this?

RE: File references &$@#!

Try using SolidWorks Explorer.

Tools\Options\System Options\File Locations\Referenced Documents?

This will change the default search paths for all assemblies during open...if that's what you really want.

RE: File references &$@#!

Also, you can rename the old location slightly.  Whenever a drawing/assembly etc. is opened that references the old location it won't find the referenced files and will ask the user to find the file.  User can then browse to the new location and select the same-named file.  I believe it will go ahead and look in that new location for any other referenced files that can't be found in the original location.

RE: File references &$@#!

Something I use all the time to shift the current revision of parts to a "fresh" revision directory is the File > Find References.  I copy the parts to my new directory and the assembly (or drawing) will naturally pick up all the current-revision parts within the new directory and will not copy the older-revision files no longer associated with the assembly/drawing.

So there are advantages to such a system.  It confused me at first as well, but now I really love it.  Your document control procedures will dictate whether this is practical in your case or not.  In my case, I have an entire library of backed-up project revisions, directory-by-directory.  So it leaves me with a history of the project devleopment, which is often quite useful.
