Lateral Sliding

Lateral Sliding

Lateral Sliding

(OP)
UBC Table 18-I-A has a value of 130 psf for lateral sliding resistance for soil #5.  Footnote 6 talks about a contact area that this value should be multiplied by.  Can anyone tell me what does UBC mean by the contact area?

RE: Lateral Sliding

They are discussing the lateral sliding of a footing on soil.  The contact area is the size of the footing(s). So a 6' x6' footing is 36 SF.

Thanks TDAA.  Does that also apply to mat foundations when checking the global sliding?

RE: Lateral Sliding

Ararat73 - instead of trying to learn how to design this from the UBC, why not pick up a good geotechnical foundation book and read up on lateral sliding of foundations (base of retaining walls, etc) - or look in NAVFAC 7.2.  This situation is typically discussed in any text (Bowles, for example).
