The link below is a collection of photographs by Edith Irvine taken in the early 20th century. It highlights the San Francisco earthquake, but also includes a number of photographs from the "Electra Power Project", at Mokelumne Hill which supposedly is one of the first hydroelectric plants in California. There are some interesting equipment close-ups.

I particularly like this one
It shows that turn of the century clash between the oncoming modern age and the outgoing age of animal power. Yet ironically the early modernization process itself was still largely dependent upon animal power at first!
