Crane Manufactures Asso. of America (CMAA) 70 Question

Crane Manufactures Asso. of America (CMAA) 70 Question

(OP)
I want to use the allowable stresses listed in 3.4 Allowable Stresses for a calculation. However, for clearification, in CMAA 70 the far right column of listed allowables, 3.4.1, 3.4.2, and 3.4.3, is "Allowable Bearing Stress" the same as bending stress?

RE: Crane Manufactures Asso. of America (CMAA) 70 Question

No
1 - Bending Stress is related to flexing of a beam - you need section modulus to calculate the stress.

2 - Bearing stress is related to the area under compression at the support of a shaft. If it is too high you will crush the bearing material - be it white metal, bronze bush, polyurethane, or whatever.

RE: Crane Manufactures Asso. of America (CMAA) 70 Question

Some Libraries may have a technical section with a copy of CMAA 70 to read or check out but the organizations pay for researching and publishing the specification by selling them.  They are not free.
