(OP)
Hi Everyone,
first off - SWx 2006 sp 4.1 dell ws, 3Gb Ram, SWx Approved Graphics card with 128 onboard and current driver.
So I have a large assembly, and I am making a drawing. Currently it is 11 pages long, and the file size is 22.8Mb The model file driving the Drawing is approximately 12Mb.
At this point I am about 90% of the way through the drawing. All my views are cut, and I am trying to complete the annotation.
However, at this point I am up agains a wall. The drawing seems to "run out" of memory as I am annotating.
I will try to describe what I am doing right now, and see if you have the same problem.
I just have the drawing open, and I'm trying to add some notation to the bom.
1. When the drawing is just open, the Windows Task Mgr is showing SWx using 630K Mem usage.
2. I add a line of annotation to one empty bom cell, mem increases to 815K
3. I add another line and mem increases to 924K
4. I add another line and mem increases to 1020K
5. I hit save. A dialogue box comes up asking me if I want to update views on inactive sheets. (mem increases to 1180K
6. I hit no. File begins saving (mem increases as saving to until it reaches about 1650K, then dialoge pops up saying "failed to save".
Anyone have any thoughts...

RE: Failed to Save
I think you really need to list your approved card and the driver version before we continue, because like I said a low-end card could cause this.

RE: Failed to Save
It's an Nvidia Quatro FX 1400. And by current driver, I mean is the approved from the swx website as of tuesday 2 weeks ago (I'm not sure what the actual number is, but I was here when our CAD manager verified it with solidworks when he upgraded it then).

RE: Failed to Save
How much space is remaining on your hard drive?
Are you running Win XP? Which service pack? Is the 3GB switch enabled?
RE: Failed to Save
Win XP w/ SP1, but patch and 3gb switch is activated as of tonight. However, I tried this on a computer running sp-2 and the switch enabled, and it did the same thing, only ran a little bit longer. The memory just jumped up higher.
Also, we use Adept as our PLM program, but this still occurs when the entire assembly is loaded locally and isolated from adept, so I know that it isn't an issue.

Have you defragged recently?
Try setting your Virtual Memory to 4096 for Max & Min.
Unless you are using the Insert > Model Items to place dimensions, you should be able to save the drawing as Detached and then place the dimensions manually. You should notice a big performance improvement using this function.
RE: Failed to Save
In the process of the week that this has been going on, IT has come and taken my computer away, and given it a day long once-over in their shop.
Will try the ver memeory settings.
Have tried detached drawings, and the same problem presits.

RE: Failed to Save
Your Var should be able to help you out... plus mmost of the questions that we asked you, you were not able to answer. the RX with answer them for you and show your VAR.

RE: Failed to Save
We did this a week ago. They finally looked at it on friday, and monday sent us a letter saying they had no ideas and sent it off to the Solidworks mothership.
I have been told that it could be up to a few weeks before we get any kind of response. And yet that doesn't satisfy the deadlines.
I still don't understand why editing the bom creates this affect.
Thanks for your help.

RE: Failed to Save
This problem is very difficult to troubleshoot because it is intermittent and not repeatable (that is, you can re-do the same changes in the same file and save without the error re-appearing). It also seems to appear across hardware platforms.
I don't know why Solidworks did not build some more advanced error-handling capabilities in to this message. The message "Failed to Save" gives you no information as to what happened, why it didn't save etc.
RE: Failed to Save
(but a followup 'save as' allows the file to overwrite the original so no work is lost)
We had an outside IT guy come in and fix a few 'network' problems and this error has gone away.

RE: Failed to Save
Hello Wes,
Hope that SolidWorks Corporate can fix this. In the meant time just a few thoughts...
Are you saving locally or to a network?
Are your SolidWorks backups pointing to your local drive or to your network?
If you save locally and point your SolidWorks backups to your local drive does the problem still occur?
Best wishes,
Joseph

RE: Failed to Save
You may want to call your VAR and ask for an escalation, since this appears to be affecting deadlines. You can also ask to speak with the SolidWorks Technical Regional Manager for your region.
Best regards,
Joseph
