weld benches for tig welding and mig welding

weld benches for tig welding and mig welding

weld benches for tig welding and mig welding

(OP)
Please be patient with us, We have a several Mig welders and Tig welders in a line type formation. Five total stations each mig and tig has it's own bench that the ground cables are connected to. The problem we are having is the Mig welder are negitive on the ground cable and positive at the torch(wire). The tig welder are reverse from this, positive at the ground cable and negitive at the torch(tungsten). We find very high DC voltage as much as 70V on the ground cable for the tigs to the bench that is causing problems with our mig welders such as unwelcomed arching. We realize we could reverse the polarity of the tig but our process doesn't require us to weld this hot. What can we do to prevent this voltage from going places it shouldn't. One thought was to size a diode to tolerate this voltage on the mig welders ground cables We are dealing with older welding equipment is the problem in our equipment? Is this a typical set up for this type of process? We have this same issue through out all of our set ups not just one station.

RE: weld benches for tig welding and mig welding

It sure sounds like you're connecting the ungrounded TIG welder cable to the table.  Maybe they were, ahem, 'rebuilt' at some time, and are not grounded where you think they are.

We can't see or feel or smell what's going on.  Call your gas supply house and ask them who repairs welding machines for them.  That guy will know what to do, and how to do it, right away.
