Extrude cut into multple faces??

Extrude cut into multple faces??

Extrude cut into multple faces??

(OP)
I am running into somewhat of a problem, I need to cut a groove or channel into a body that has multiply faces.  These faces are all different contours.  The groove/channel can only be 0.050" deep from the initial face.

It seems like the extrude cut feature from face would work but I cannot select multiple faces.  The other option is rotate the part, split it, trace the top counter, offset the sketch then extrude cut in both directions.  This is not accurate enough and I figured that there had to be a better way.

So any ideas?

Thanks.

RE: Extrude cut into multple faces??

1) Create planes at the edges of where the groove will be.
2) Use those planes to split the surfaces.
3) Create a zero offset surfaces from the split faces inside the groove planes.
4) Thicken the zero offset surface.

RE: Extrude cut into multple faces??

Correction ... 4) should be "Thicken-cut the zero offset surface."
This method will give a groove with angled sides though.

Heres a quick model showing the above, and an alternative config with parallel sides.

Your example does indeed work.  I had no idea that I would be that difficult.  Couldn't imagine if I had to do an odd spiral around the outside of the cone example.

RE: Extrude cut into multple faces??

There may be simpler ways but that was the first one that popped into my head.

RE: Extrude cut into multple faces??

Insert>Surface>Offset (0.050") all the surfaces that you would like the cut to go through

then Insert>Cut>Extrude[Until surface (pick the offset surface)]

This will allow a Cut Extrude through multiple faces)
