Worm Gear Design

Worm Gear Design

Worm Gear Design

(OP)
Hello,

I am a novice at worm gear design and need a bit of help.  I am attempting to select a worm gear combination that has the following parameters.

I am rotating a drum that has a 40" moment arm with 800 pounds of force from the center.  The diameter of the drum is 96".  I need to spin the drum at 1.6 RPMs.

The current worm gear setup is a 12" diameter gear with a 100:1 ratio. The gear face is 3/4".  I feel this setup is highly overstressed and needs to be upgraded but I unfamiliar with the math.

If anyone can assist me with this, it would be well appreciated.

Thanks, ChuckOU812

RE: Worm Gear Design

Do you feel or you calculated it?

israelkk,

The current setup was is place before I started working on the project. There is alot of wear showing on the worm and gear.  The block holding the worm has loosened before as well.

RE: Worm Gear Design

Any graduate mechanical engineering book such as from Shigley or Norton has the basic formulation for worm gear strength and wear calculations. The fact that there is a wear on the worm and the gear doesn't mean improper design. It may be the result of long use, bad lubrication etc.

SDP-SI web site is not working for the last few days so this link is not working. I hope they are still in business.
