316SS Tubing Corrosion issues

316SS Tubing Corrosion issues

(OP)
I have found some problems with external saltwater corrosion on 316 SS tubing. Some of this corrosion cleans up pretty good with a high pressure fresh water wash.

Is there some coating that you recommend that we could apply to the tubing to prevent reoccurance, or at least inhibit reoccurrance to some degree?

Anyother info will be appreciated.

RE: 316SS Tubing Corrosion issues

How much saltwater exposure are you dealing with?
In general, for 316 to survive seawater exposure you need a very good surface finish, no crevices at all, and a surface sealer (like a wax).  And was with fresh water often.
Don't paint it with a varnish or laquer.  Any defect in the coating only crates worse crevices.
I would not expect 316 to survive seawater exposure, it does not have enough corrosion resistance.

it is in GOM and it gets lot of sea water.

thanks for you input.

Is there something can be done as far as Coating is concerned.

Is this open exsposure?  If so it isn't as bad.  Wash down will do most of the work.  I know that wax and wipe on sealers are a pain becuase you have to keep reapplying them, but paint on coating do more harm than good.  Wipping on wax also assures that you are cleaning the surfaces.
I know that there is a lot of 304 and 316 marine hardware out there, and that some of it has lasted for a long time.  That doesn't change the fact that I see cases regularly where parts have failed because of chloride pitting from seawater.
