Forming Analysis

Forming Analysis

Forming Analysis

(OP)
First time I am posting here. Any help on the following problem will be much appreciated.
I am trying to simulate forming (actually crimping) anlysis on an assembly of components. Its 2D analysis with and during analysis is exiting stating time increment required is smaller than specified (specified min -1e-05). Also it is showing elements sticking between punch and component (right now I have given penulty friction of 0.05). Should I increase the friction or change meshing or do something else. (I am using relatively fine meshing in that area).

Thanks again

RE: Forming Analysis

Hi Dipak

I assume that you are using ABAQUS/Standard to do the forming analysis with a *STATIC step?  If so, you could try doing an ABAQUS/Explicit quasi-static analysis of the forming - Explicit can sometimes handle complex contact more efficiently than Standard.

If you do decide to look at Explicit, read up on mass scaling as this can be used to reduce the computation time.  However, you need to keep an eye on amount of mass scaling which is output to the .sta file.  If the increase in mass is too great, it'll be like trying to form lead with a pin....

Hi Martin,
Thank you very much for the reply.
You are right about using ABAQUS/Standard to do the forming analysis. If I not wrong, right now we have only ABAQUS/Standard license and not for ABAQUS/Explicit. I will once again confirm that.
In ABAQUS/Standard we have completed similar analysis before but this time due to shape and material changes I am not able to complete it.
Any more advice will be appreciated
Thanks again

Dipak
