Hydrostatic Testing Risk Containment

Hydrostatic Testing Risk Containment

Hydrostatic Testing Risk Containment

(OP)
When performing hydrostatic testing on large tube & header assemblies, expandable plugs are often used in place of welded plugs.  This presents a major problem if the air is not properly bled.  This may be more of a ballistics question, but what type of backup safety precautions are typically taken when hydrotesting large boiler / tube & header assemblies?

The size of plugs range from 1" dia (3/4 lbs) to 16" (350 lbs), and the max testing pressure is 6500 psi.

deanc,

Thank you for the link.  Are there any other backup systems used to protect against a tether/gag failure?  Perhaps woven netting or something of the sort?

RE: Hydrostatic Testing Risk Containment

Have customers that use enclosed booths and bays along with the gags. I have seen "blast" blankets used.

Binoculars and good running shoes are always a last option.
