Inter-story drift ratio Vs. overall story drift ratio

Inter-story drift ratio Vs. overall story drift ratio

Inter-story drift ratio Vs. overall story drift ratio

(OP)
As we al know, the inter-story drift ratio is an important coefficient in the high-rise building design. However, is the Maximum displacement / building height considered as a more important index in US design? Say, satisfy the wind load to 1/400 x H.

RE: Inter-story drift ratio Vs. overall story drift ratio

It's more important just like bending moment is more important than shear.

You have to check them both.

However, if you design each story for an interstory drift of H/400, your total drift will be less than or equal to H/400, though if you design the total building for H/400, it doesn't mean each story deflection is less than H/400.
