Reducing Flange Ratings

Reducing Flange Ratings

Reducing Flange Ratings

(OP)
2" s.s. nozzle in shell designed for 150 psig @ 400F jacketed by a 3" c.s. nozzle designed for 260 psig @ 450F

I can't find anything in ASME Sect XIII Div 1 that addresses this specifically => What tells me the reducing flange has to be rated to withstand the jacketing nozzle pressure and temp or not?  I can see it both ways.

I hope that makes sense.  Thanks for the help.

Brian

RE: Reducing Flange Ratings

waskillywabbit, my understanding is that you are concerned with the nozzle flange only, not reinforcement, etc. So based on that:

Assuming the flange itself is not exposed to the jacket pressure I would design for 150 psig.

Assuming the flange itself could be exposed to the jacket temperature I would design for 450 F.

Thereby you not only can see it both ways, you can have it both ways.

Regards,

Mike
