kJ/kV

Hello,

Does anyone know what standard sets out the Energy Discharge Capacity for a surge capacitor?

I have varistar SA from Cooper @3kV and I am being asked if it has a discharge capacity of 5.1kJ/kV.

I realize I can call the manufacturer, but is there not a standard that will say something like "Class x SA's have a discharge of...." under IEEE ....?

Regards,
TULUM

RE: kJ/kV

Surge capacitor works with surge arrester in parallel to provide surge protection for motor. Surge capacitor will reduce the voltage rate of rise (dV/dt) of voltage transients while the arrester will reduce the peak of the voltage transient.

For relative energy capability kJ/kV check ANSI/IEEE Std. C62.11. (distribution, intermediate or station class arrester) or per IEC std 99-4 for classes 1 to 5.

I don't think capacitor along do not have any discharge energy rating.
