UG NX2 AutoSave

UG NX2 AutoSave

UG NX2 AutoSave

(OP)
Does anyone know if NX2 still supports the older AutoSave feature of years past?  In earlier versions of UG you could toggle On and Off an AutoSave feature for timed file saves.

Or does anyone know of a quality application that will run soley off of a USB keydrive to manage an AutoSave?  Since endusers are no longer allowed to write any applications to the corporate workstations...

Thanks for info

RE: UG NX2 AutoSave

Sorry, but "Auto Save" was removed when Unigraphics V10.0 was released.  With the advent of having multiple files open in the same session, either individually or as part of an assembly, the usefulness and desirability of a feature like this was considered to have diminished significantly, considering that there are times when ONLY the current Work Part should be saved while at other times it might be desirable to save some of the other files, but NOT all of them that were open in the session.

Also we discovered that even with pre-V10.0, the value of the this function was often questioned by people who were "rudely interrupted" by an "auto save" right as they were ready to perform some operation and after this occured a second or a third time, the "Auto Save" feature was promptly turned-off.

And now with the advent of data management systems, such as TeamCenter, the whole issue of what is being saved and how it should be logged and responded to creates a whole new set of potential issues for companies.

In the end, if was deemed more work and effort than it was worth once everyone became aware of all of the options and exceptions and rules that would have be allowed for to make a truly useful and practical feature.

RE: UG NX2 AutoSave

Thanks for the info John and the quick response.  I was afraid the AutoSave had been removed as I couldn't locate any "hidden" switch to toggle.  I've been a full time enduser since the v10 rollout and seen many improvements across the versions.

I can understand where TeamCenter is certainly a useful tool.  I've used the application and it's predecessors with varying degrees of success.

I was hoping there was still a simple top level save but as with all progress change is ever the companion, I just caught on this one.  I'll track down a good macro or autosave program and run one from the outside.

Thanks again

RE: UG NX2 AutoSave

NX4 does give you the option of having reminders to save, which I feel is much more agreeable than having auto-save.

RE: UG NX2 AutoSave

Gee, even I missed that one.  It was added in one of the NX 4 releases, but it appears that it never made the "What's New Guide".

Ewh,

Wow... tis not very often that someone suggests something that John didn't know about.  Here's your star!  smile

CAD should pay for itself, shouldn't it?

RE: UG NX2 AutoSave

Thanks!  It's a good thing that I was sitting down when I saw John's response!wink

RE: UG NX2 AutoSave

The reminder isn't perfect.  It will sometimes tell you something to the effect "It has been one minute since you last saved.  Would you like to save now?"  I have actually seen this happen.  It is still much better than the old auto save.

RE: UG NX2 AutoSave

Probably came over from I-deas.  That's pretty much the same message that I-deas pops up with from time to time.

It sounds like NX4 is the solution alright.  I'd come to the same resolve when I was browsing through some of the autosave programs that are available.  It would be much nicer to simply have a pop-up to remind me save as opposed to the save actually taking place.

I found a couple of auto-timers that could save or simply remind you to save.  I'll probably use them until we go to NX4 but I'm glad to hear the option will be available.

Thanks for the data guys, I appreciate the response.

Oh, if anyone else needs a "patch" until they go to NX4 this site had several references on autosave and timer applications:

I did notice that many of these are simple try-it before you buy-it with some functionality missing on the trial versions.  But it looks like a good place to start...
