SectionViews through multple parts

SectionViews through multple parts

SectionViews through multple parts

(OP)
Can someone explain to me in simple terms how to do a 'composite' section through a press tool I have drawn up in MDT5. I have sussed the 'new view' and cutline sketch being in two pieces starting outside in then inside out but I need to cut across various portions to show different aspects of the tools operation.

Im quite new to this side of things, and tend not to build sub assemblies or full assemblies - I tend to (perhaps wrongly) just make new parts all the time in a massive tree and just manouver them into place as its good enough for what I need. Is this wrong? and why I cant get section views the way I want?

For example from middle of the bolster plate horizontal, onto half a screw/dowel hole then back a bit and along through a form stage etc, passing along the tool so in 'front view' of the eventual 2d drawing would show various important things simultaniously in one cross section. And is there a way to stop all the cross hatching going the same way! - bad practice in draughting, but this could be because I have built it wrong- how are you supposed to do a task like this?. Is this composite view capable of being done through multiple parts like I have made?

I tried a cutline sketch along the required path and it says it only expects two line segments or something, there are other types which ask for 'work planes' but these are singular in dimension arent they!. Does anyone know what Im on about??.

 Thanks,

Sirius.

RE: SectionViews through multple parts

Right then, to start I know more about MD6 than MD5 but most features are the same.

Good Practice for Assemblies.

I found this out the hard way. When you are producing an assembly produce the parts in seperate part files then create a new assembly file and attach them.

If you need to create the parts in the assembly, for instance when they mate and you want to define them together, then once each part is finished export it from the assembly and then attach it back again.

The reason is that it reduces the amount of memory the program uses when assemblies aee open. (I found out 'cause one crashed irreversably).

The other point is that automatic hatching creates a single hatch if parts are 'combined', etc. to make a single part. Whereas each individual item is hatched seperately in an assembly.

Sections.

You can only create sections against planes or cutting lines. I haven't tried this but give it a go.

Create a 3D line (any old line). Then create a 'special line' (search through help for this) and convert it to a cutting line. this may get round your problem.

(note: I'm writing this from memory, the menu command may be 'Special lines' 'Cutting Line' or 'Section Line').

If your've created an assembly and not a part then create a 'Scene'. This collects all the parts of the assembly and treats them as one. This can help when trying to create sections. For example, I deal with rotational parts, I only have to create one part with a visible axis and axial plane and I can section the entire assembly.

Hatching.

In addition to what I've mentioned above play around with the hatch angle, it doesn't always produce the required effect, try altereing it in 5° increments until your happy.

Hope this helps, I marked this thread for E-mail, so if you post any response I'll come straight back.
