Upgrade vs New Installation - Why is "Upgrade" an Option?

Upgrade vs New Installation - Why is "Upgrade" an Option?

(OP)
Just a point of curiosity:  Every time I've upgraded to a new version of SolidWorks, I've been presented with the option of either upgrading an existing install or doing a fresh install.  However, there's always a sheet of paper from SolidWorks in the box with the CDs recommending a new install rather than upgrading.  This brings several questions to my mind.  Why is upgrading not recommended?  Why even give the option to upgrade if it's not recommended?  On the other hand, what would be a reason to upgrade rather than doing a new install?

RE: Upgrade vs New Installation - Why is "Upgrade" an Option?

It is kind of like Windows. You can upgrade Windows 95 to XP, but doing a fresh install is always better. If you upgrade supposedly all your settings get carried over.

I noticed that installing 2007 it automagically pulled in 2006 settings which can cause problems.

Actually if you have SW06 or and older version in your registry it will always just copy the reg settings for Toolbars etc... and its always been like that.

Upgrade is an option, but like kellnerp says its always better to do a new install. I always recommend that to all my users.
