We are using desiccant dryers/scrubbers downstream of some high-pressure (2500-3000 psig) air compressors. Because the air pressures are so high, we use synthetic cylinder lubricant. We had an episode where oil was carried through the dryer, but it was only discovered by doing a condensible hydrocarbon sample/analysis in the lab. I believe the analysis only dealt with the weight of the substance and not the chemical makeup. Our online hydrocarbon (Rosemount 400A)analyzer gave no indication, but further reflection made me realize that it is not designed to pick up synthetics.

I'm thinking one would need an online gas chromatograph or mass spectrometer. Any ideas or suggestions?

I think recently I saw an online chromatograph by Siemens in a bus-expo but I do not remember the details.

I think the first step would be to identify the chemistry of the oil, if not hydrocarbons, then probably phosphor based esters, fluorinated silicones or halogenated fire-resistant fluids. Then, the proper detector could be specified.
