we found a box of these in a basement and we cannot figure out what they are. they have "91A xxx" printed on the side where xxx are numbers ranging from 116 to 140.

here is a link to a picture, its not very good but you get the idea.

Looks like a feedthrough cap.  Is the post round or square?  I've used the square ones for wirewrap posts in telecom applications.  Take a look at Tusonix and see if it matches anything: http://www.tusonix.com/filters.html

What about using a camera instead of a phone? That would make the task a lot easier.

Looks like Darth Vader's gold plated light saber to me.

PIN diode also comes to mind.
Any electrical tests you can do on it?

Did you try any standard way of identifying it? Like finding out R, L, C? Or checking forward drop, brake-down voltage etc? Or do you expect us to do it for you?
