renaming a group of files

I wonder if there is a way that a group of files can be renamed all at once. Our file names are ten digits long, three of these digits denote the specific machine. I have an assembly file and group of about two dozen part files for which I want to change those three digits. I know that I can use SWExplorer to do it, one file at a time, but I wonder if I can use something like TaskScheduler to do it all at once.
