leading powerfactor

leading powerfactor

(OP)
I have noticed that our plant pfc cubiles sometimes show a leading powerfactor for 10min or so as the capacitor banks switch back out after a sudden drop in load, Is this likely to cause any extra charges greater than that if the powerfactor was lagging rather than leading. are there any other cosnsiderations with drive control equipment?
thanks

RE: leading powerfactor

As far as charges for a leading power factor, it depends.
Some power companies will let you "Bank" leading VARs. (No charge for leading power factor).
Some power companies only meter lagging VARs and prevent the meters from recording leading VARs. (No charge for leading power factor).
Some power companies charge a penalty whenever the power factor is less than unity. That is, penalties are charged for either leading or lagging power factors. Our forum members in India tell us that these types of charges are common in India.
Phone your power company and ask them what their policies and charges are.
I will leave the question of the effect on the drives to the drive experts.
respectfully
