GTAW welding of TP304 vs TP304L

(OP)
Dear all,

please just indicate to me your experience regarding GTAW welding of the a.m. austenitic steels. The main scope is piping manufacturing for chemical industry. Are there any reason to prefer one instead of the other?
I thank you very much for your valuable opinion.

RE: GTAW welding of TP304 vs TP304L

The austenitic stainless steels mentioned above are readily weldable with the GTAW process. The factors to consider for assuring a good quality job are;

cleanliness
proper selection of filler metal - 308L filler metal
no preheat
maximum interpass temperature of 300 deg F
no post weld heat treatment

For better corrosion resistance at welded connections - use 304L material with 308L filler metal.
