Another Amps to kVA conversion
Another Amps to kVA conversion
(OP)
I've looked around for formulas that convert Amps to kVA and I've found at least three different converters that give me three different answers. Here's my situation:
I've got an ozone injection system (for environmental remediation) that requires 80amp, single-phase, 110/220v powwer. I'm trying to find a suitable generator. How many kVA will the generator need to be to meet those specifications?
Thanks.

RE: Another Amps to kVA conversion
First answer;
80 amps x 220 volts / 1000 = 17.6 KVA.
However, you must use the same voltage that was used by the genset maker to rate the set.
If the set is for use in the NEMA world, it will be rated for 120/240 volts.
Second answer;
80 amps x 240 volts = 19.2 KVA.
Some loads draw a higher current at higher voltage levels. Often the current increase with higher voltage is linear.
If we adjust the current for a 240 volt supply, we get;
Third answer:
80 amps x 240 volts / 220 volts = 87.273 amps.
87.273 amps x 240 volts = 20.95 KVA
I would suggest adding at least 25% to the size of the genset, over the bare minimum.
That would be;
17.6 x 125% = 22 KVA
or
19.2 x 125% = 24 KVA
or
20.95 x 125% = 26.19 KVA
Your ultimate choice will depend on your assesment of your load current at the applied voltage and the sizes of gensets available.
It looks like your original three answers has expanded to six answers.

Generators are probably THE most stolen piece of heavy equipment. If it will be "out on its own" you really must take extraordinary measures to prevent it's guaranteed theft.
Suggestions:
Bury a large square pipe and use massive chain.
Use a protected lock.
Install a "Lojack" system.
