JPGs in part model

JPGs in part model

JPGs in part model

(OP)
I have modeled a truck cab by inserting 2 JPGs (made from a PDF file) of the front & side view. I scaled the pictures up & used them as a reference to build sketches & extrusions... tedious, but simple enough. I saved the part (JPGs still in there) & then made a copy of it. I deleted the JPGs from the copy - expecting to reduce the file size. but the copy with no JPGs almost doubled in size (from 1.3M to 2.0M)... I'm perplexed a little!

What happened?

EcoSqueeze... Is that like UnFrag? I've used UnFrag before.

RE: JPGs in part model

No. It doesn't unfrag the files, just compresses them to make them smaller.

RE: JPGs in part model

Be aware if you do use that and the file corrupts SW will not support it. So its a use at your own risk application. I have many good things about it, but you need to be aware of this.

Most of the reason files grow in size no matter what you remove is because of Microsoft. They had Shade files and other things to the file to give you the links and HTMl abilities in the file. There is no way to stop the growing once it starts. EcoSqueeze is a good way to help minimize it, but as soon as you resave the file, the file size is back again.

RE: JPGs in part model

Hello TateJ,

Hope you are doing great.

A JPEG causes the file size of a SolidWorks document to jump, because SolidWorks converts the JPEG into a Bitmap. In other words, SolidWorks does not understand the losy compression used in a JPEG and basically uses pixels, which is very uncompressed.

Now to solve your problem I would recommend doing a Save As.. and saving the SolidWorks file with a different name.

Please let us know if this fixes the problem. If it doesn't that would appear to be a bug and it may be time for you to contact your reseller.

Thanks,

Joseph

Good info JOSEPHV... thanks.

I saved a copy of the part with no JPGs in it & used EcoSqueeze. I haven't really thought much about it since... I doubt I will again soon. But I'll let y'all know if this part kraps out on me later.

RE: JPGs in part model

Forgot about the Save as new name option myself... but the same rule applies... once you save it second time the file size will return.
