end to SW dominance?
end to SW dominance?
(OP)
Not sure this it really on topic but.
As most of you know SE & SW use the same kernel.
The kernel is owned by SE and SW pay to use it.
I guess when UGS acquired SE there was some kind of sunset clause allowing SW to continue using it for a while.
Supposedly SW have been notified by UGS that they only have something like 14 months before they must stop using it.
I wonder if this will have an impact on SW dominance and maybe us SE guys will see some benefits.

This is just hearsay that I overheard I have no idea as to its authenticity.

RE: end to SW dominance?
Personally I think UGS stifles SE's sales. Apparently they don't hinder it's development as its added some really great features but it's sales have been low and I feel that UGS is to blame as they would rather you buy UG.
As for the kernel deal, I haven't heard anything about that. UGS licenses their kernel to several different cad/cam products. Not sure why buying SE would activate some kind of clause allowing SWX to continue using it. SE used the acis kernel and switched to parasolid after being aquired by UGS.
Anyway...this just sounds like a salemens rumors to try and scare people away from Swx. It happened when dassault bought Solidworks...they all said that Dassault has Catia and therefore would kill off Solidworks. Instead, Dassault allows Solidworks to act as a separate company which is why it's done so well. UGS should follow that same philosophy in regards to SE.

On a seperate note, the Parasolid kernel is developed under the "Open" end of UGS. Basically, the D-Cubed functionality recently purchused by UGS, parasolid, and the jt viewer standard are all open. This philosophy is not changing at UGS any time soon and therefore will continue to be licensed to anyone.

RE: end to SW dominance?
Having been around UGS for 20 years, I cannot see them giving up the royalties that they they derive from Dassault.
Yes, SE has some great tools in it. UGS has even taken the SE sheetmetal module and incorporated it into NX. I don't think separating NX and SE will help the sales of SE. I think it just needs more aggressive pushing by the VAR's with advertising help from UGS.
